scarf - import shop in Copenhagen / tweed wool blazer - vintage, mom's / striped shirt - thrifted / overdyed skinnies - Zara / purse - custom, valhallabrooklyn via etsy / woven flats - UO

Just a few photos from a lovely fall walk in our new neighborhood. We got the keys to our new place just over three weeks ago, and since then we have been working on it non-stop - from fixing broken doors to caulking windows, replacing our refrigerator, painting our six (six! seven if you count the vestibule! but of course, they're all tiny) rooms to putting up shelves and negotiating turn-of-the-century closets that aren't even deep enough to put a hanger in straight. I haven't bothered with nail polish or makeup in weeks, and it isn't unusual these days for me to find paint on my elbows in the middle of the workday.

Still, it's been fun rediscovering some old favorites as I slooooowly unpack my clothes. Case in point, this herringbone tweed blazer, definitely one of the nicest vintage pieces I own. It was part of a suit my Mom wore as she was just beginning her professional career, and I now love pairing it with more casual outfits to give them some classic texture and shape. It's also been the perfect outer layer for the fabulous weather we've been having lately, and I've been trying to get out and enjoy it as much as I can in between our many home improvement projects.

  1. This outfit is so cute and preppy :)  The house redo sounds intense, but it's always fun to redecorate a new place.

  7. The blazer looks beautiful with jeans. Such a good idea to separate a suit and mix it up with something a little more casual.

Sounds like you've been having a lot of fun with the apartment. I'd love to be able to play around decorating my place. Silly landlord not letting me change anything!

  12. Thank you! I love wearing it as a light jacket, it can be a little warm to wear in my slightly over-heated office but it's perfect for the great weather we've been having. :)

  13. what a perfect, highly reusable piece of vintage! my mom was a little too, uhhm, "on-trend" in the 80s, so her archived wares are full of oversize Cosby-eqsue sweaters (often bedazzled in some manner), sorbet-hued stirrup pants, suede pumps in every color imaginable (sadly, my feet are 1.5 sizes too small for them), and novelty earrings that graze the shoulder. ;-)

  15. Haha, what a well-timed cautionary tale! I'm currently in the midst of a massive closet clean-out (well, it's really more of a box clean-out, as there isn't actually room for 80% of my clothes in my teeny tiny closet) and I'm trying to balance my lifelong pack-rat tendencies against the temptation to get rid of almost everything and start more or less fresh. I'm trying to find a reasonable middle ground, but my years of uncritical thrifting and popping into H&M on the way home from work are finally coming back to bite me!

  16. I know, I really got pretty lucky. :) I have a great pair of boots from her too that I nearly wore to death in grad school.

  17. Aw, thank you! Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on how you look at it) there are no 'before' pictures to really show the scale of the transformation - I meant to take some, but we were so eager to get started that we completely forgot! Suffice it to say, it was pretty darn gross to begin with.

  18. Thanks Paige! I'm definitely hoping to put together a little house tour for the blog once things are a little more cleaned up - or once I push all the half-unpacked boxes out of view, whichever comes first. :)

  19. Thanks Sorcha! Yeah, having a very easy-going landlord is sort of a mixed blessing - I love that she's letting us paint (with colors!), but on the other hand, when our fridge conked out we had to go get the replacement ourselves and be reimbursed, which was a lot of trouble. Still, I'm excited to be making our home feel like it's really ours!

  20. Aren't her bags gorgeous? Mine was a birthday gift from my parents and I definitely recommend them. Karen was great about working out all the custom options I wanted to add, and when a small piece of hardware broke a couple months after purchase, she promptly repaired it for me for free.

  21. Thanks Jenn! There's something about tweed and a scarf that feels so perfectly 'fall' to me. :)

  22. Thanks! I'm hoping to get things a little tidied up around the apartment this week so I can snap some photos soon. :)

  23. Hahaha, that sounds amazing! My mom definitely had a few of those in her day too, but I think most of her '80s/early '90s wardrobe finally made its way to Value Village a few years ago... of course, probably right before the '80s look really came back in style. :)

  24. Thanks S! I hope at some point you, D, and M can actually come see it. :)

(And here's hoping blogging can start to be a more regular part of that life again...)
