jean jacket - LOFT, thrifted / necklace - clyde's rebirth / v-neck - Old Navy / friendship bracelet - gift from high school boyfriend / watch - Arkanoplatz flea market, Berlin / pleated skirt - vintage Liz Claiborne, thrifted / clogs - Target

Both this jacket and skirt were scored on an incredibly fruitful thrifting trip with Tania last week. I've worn the jacket nearly every day since, but this pleated skirt felt like the real 'find' of the day. I've been itching for a longer sheer black skirt for a long time, and for just $2.50, this one really fit the bill. The pleated chiffon feels so dreamy and perfectly floaty, I'm afraid these photos really don't do this magic skirt justice. For a day spent birthday shopping with my mom (tomorrow I'll hit the big 2-7), I loved it with high platforms and this amazing wood and brass necklace I recently bought from Merl, and I'm looking forward to pairing it with tights and cozy sweaters as the weather continues to cool off.

And just in case you haven't seen it yet, yesterday Elaine of Clothed Much featured me in her 'Blog Crush' series! Hers was one of the very first style blogs I ever read, so I'm quite flattered. You can read the whole interview here.

  2. I'm totally smitten with that black skirt! It's absolutely beautiful. Is it weird that my first thought was 'that would make a great skirt for a witch Halloween costume'?

  3. I absolutely love it, it's hard to photograph but it moves *so* well. And you're totally right, it would work perfectly for a witch costume, haha! :)

  16. Great skirt!  I am obsessed with pleated skirts and it's the first time I see a black one.  Looks great on you and perfect with your jean jacket.

  17. I recently picked up a jean jacket, after not having worn one since my high school, working at the Gap Outlet days - but I get nervous about looking like a high schooler and so have been on the lookout for grown-up styling... And this is a fabulous example. So perfect with that skirt!

  24. Thank you! We actually went to a few stores in Northern Virginia - this skirt (and my loafers from my last post) came from the Clock Tower Thrift Shop in Falls Church, and the jean jacket came from Unique Thrift out on Gallows Road, which is *ridiculously* huge and definitely worth a visit.

  25. Thanks Erin, I couldn't believe my luck when I pulled it off the rack. :)

  26. Haha, thanks Tania. I always figure if I'm dealing with a hemline of questionable flattery, I should just try it with the highest shoes I have. :)

  27. Definitely a lucky find - it was actually marked $5 (which I still thought was a steal), but when I got to the register I found out it was actually 50% off!

  28. Thanks Jenn! I suspect there are hundreds of this kind of skirt from the '80s hiding in the back racks of thrift stores everywhere, so you should definitely keep an eye out for yours. :)

    ReplyDelete
  29. Haha, shouldn't that mean that there's even more good stuff to be had thrifting in the area, now that I'm not out hogging it all? :)

This length definitely isn't something I've felt confident trying before, but now that I have, I sort of love it - it's so fun and swishy, but less troublesome than a true maxi length.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Thanks Anja! I have been pretty wary of this length of skirt because of my height, but I bet this style would look lovely on you!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Haha, thank you! I definitely recommend patience and persistence when shopping secondhand, and taking the time to really look at everything - lots of times you'll come up with nothing, but it only takes a few gems to make all that careful looking worth it!

  32. I definitely got lucky with this one, often I just skip over black clothes while thrifting because I already have so much black in my closet - fortunately the lovely pleating on this skirt really stood out on the rack, otherwise I might have missed it altogether!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Thanks Alessandra! I am definitely getting more into pleats, I have a lovely pleated dress as well and will be on the lookout for more. :)

    ReplyDelete
  34. Haha, I know just what you mean - I had a jean jacket from Old Navy that I wore *constantly* in high school, so it's hard not to feel a little juvenile every time I wear one now. I think this one might become just as much of a staple as my last one though, lately I've been wearing it every day!

  35. Aw, thanks Genny! I'm still practicing my 'wavy' styling and it's taking a little getting used to, but I love getting to skip the blow-dryer in hot weather!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Thanks Caitlin! I love this necklace too, the wood and brass just seem to go beautifully with everything.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Thanks Cathey, it was definitely a lovely birthday. :)

  38. Thank you, Callie! This is definitely an outfit I can see myself coming back to again and again. :)

    ReplyDelete
  39. Thanks Sian, and welcome! I love the sheerness of it too - although I realized halfway through the day that the slit in the back of the lining went up quite a bit farther than I'd realized, whoops!

  40. My schedule was so crazy while I was in DC but I was so glad I got the chance to hang out with Tania, she is even more fun in person than in blog-land. :)

  41. Adorable- I love how you paired that skirt & the denim jacket. Really great look!

    ReplyDelete
  42.  i have a similar length hair to yours and have been trying to get wave like that!  is your hair naturally wavy?  how do you style it?

    ReplyDelete
  43. It is somewhat naturally wavy, so lately I've been doing my best to encourage it. After I wash it, I towel-dry it and just finger-comb a little styling serum through it (not really sure what this stuff is, but I bought it from my hair stylist and it smells nice). Then I put some mousse in and gently scrunch it a bit to get it sort of wavy and piecey. Then I just let it air-dry. I think the key to getting it wavy is not to mess with it too much - definitely no brushing or blow-drying (unless you use a diffuser, which I don't have).

  44. I just snagged a maroon chiffon maxi/midi skirt, and I can't wait to style it this fall. I love how you added casual touches like the denim jacket and your fabulous Clyde's Rebirth necklace!

  45. thanks so much for the tips!  i'm going to try and see how it works on my hair.
