the perfect bun

pinned

I've gotten a few requests lately for a tutorial on how I do my near-daily bun; long-time readers may remember a bun-tutorial video I posted some months ago (you can find it at the bottom of this post), but as I've picked up some new readers since then (yay! welcome!) and I've substantially changed my bun technique, I thought it would be worthwhile to just make a new tutorial. Enjoy!

The sock-bun technique works best with a sock that's the same color as your hair or a shade darker, as it will be harder to see in case you end up with any gaps. You can also rough up your ponytail a little first for a messier look, or if you want to make it extra fancy (and have longer hair) you could even wrap a small braid around the base of the bun.

This is so perfect! I have been looking for easy ways to do a cute and chic bun. Thanks so much for sharing! I can't wait to give this a shot!

Holly said...

that is so clever! your signature bun is so cute and pretty. my hair just touches my shoulders right now, and i will use this opportunity to admit that once i started reading your blog, i decided i have to grow my hair a bit longer just so i can wear it in a bun! i'm pumped to learn this sock trick so that i can do it sooner than later.

Adrienne said...

This is seriously great. I have hair about the same length as yours, and wear my hair in buns all the time for work. I'm trying this as soon as I get my hands on a "brunette" sock!

Dani Ganley said...

You're so smart! I bought a net-type thing that looks exactly like your sock but probably costs more, unfortunately and I used it all the time when I had longer hair! Now, my hair's shorter, so it's pretty hard, but I'll have to try your technique and maybe it'll end up small enough to work with my hair!

This is awesome!!

Audrey @ Putting Me Together said...

This is genius.  My hair is far too short for a bun, but if I still had long hair, I would be all over this.

Katherine Palmatier said...

wow, i just tried it and i love how it looks :) thanks for the tutorial!!

OH MY GOSH> I had no idea you were wearing a sock in your hair! You've quite literally blown my mind right now! Is this how you did your bun when we hung out? Because i totally couldn't tell. Wow. So impressed!!! Must try immediately!!

ilene said...

i'm always on the hunt for different kinds of bun-styles. thanks for sharing this - excellent!

What Would a Nerd Wear said...

whoa this is truly awesome. i want to try this on my hair even though it is super long because when i wrap it around too much it starts to unwrap itself (this sentence makes little to no sense now that i've written it but oh well...).
also you're even more beautiful on video!

OMG, that is the most clever thing I've ever seen! I can't wait to try it out! :)

I've often wondered how you get that perfect looking knot!  How have I never heard of this before?!  It's genius!

Kimbercrafts said...

This is so awesome! I will need to let my hair grow out a little more before I'm able to take advantage of the sock trick, but I've bookmarked this for future use. Thanks for sharing!

Brandilyn Haynes said...

so easy! so clever! and our hair is close to the same length...ie not that long. thank you!

Kate said...

Yay! Thanks so much! I will definitely be trying this.

Sara Brenton said...

Oh my gosh, this is so great!!!! Thank you so much for sharing. Now I just need to find a 'blonde' sock!!!

Sara Brenton said...

Me again! As I said, I needed to find a 'blonde' sock. I searched my sock draw, and found a tan stocking. I cut this us and used it - which worked really well, as it wasn't as thick as a sock, which helped, as my hair is quite short! Thanks again Emily!!!

Kathleen Farah said...

You are so smart!
I'm totally trying this when I get home. This literally BLEW MY MIND.

Leah M. said...

Great video, thanks for posting this! I saw a similar how-to somewhere with double buns where you use socks, too.

this is great! I am a little sad I cut off all my hair now.

(!!!!!!!) I have never found a bun technique that worked for my crazy thick, wavy/straight/curly, schizophrenic hair, and you have totally changed that in mere minutes! I made a not too awful looking bun on my 1st, yes FIRST, try. Thanks Emily, you are super neat!!!

kate said...

I am so doing this once my hair is long enough! Time to start looking for red hair coloured socks now...

Lea said...

So great! just tried it and it works so good, my hair is pretty long but thin and now it looks like it was so much fuller!

anne731 said...

I've done the same, but since my hair is fine I doubled the knee sock over and back combed my hair. It is not as dramatic but still an improvement!

Leah Jones said...

I have super long long with tons of layers, and my buns had always ended up looking like a frizzy turd. Thanks so much for this tutorial. My bun is now beautiful.

o.m.g. this is brilliant and awesome and just so cool! someone pinned this on pinterest and i had to check it out. this looks so easy, too! i am going to try this after i shower and get ready for work tonight! it's summer here in TX and so darn hot that i am almost always wearing my hair up. if not in a pony then in a messy bun that i just twist together. so glad there is an easy way to transform my sloppy bun into a nice neat sleek one. my hair is on the short side, but not too short- i don't think- that i couldn't do this. must locate a brown sock. i'm sure someone in this house has one they don't mind sacrificing. :) thanks so much! and bookmarked your blog to come check often!

If this one doesn't work for your long hair, try googling the fully rolled sock bun. Mine's nearly classic length and it works well. That said, I'm book marking this technique for when I cut it!

I'm in the army and we must wear a neat bun while in uniform. I used a sock bun all the time when my hair was shorter. It looks perfect and no weird poakies. I do it every so often now with longer hair. And it looks great still

I've been looking for the perfect way to make a bun for a few weeks and this is just perfect! Thank you so much!

stephanieblack said...

so awesome! I used to wear the hair doughnuts to achieve this same look, back when I was a dancer.

I think I might actually prefer the sock method, because the hair doughnuts are grey and stiff, whereas you socks are soft and you can get them in brown.

Does anyone have a suggestion for a sock color for blonde hair? White? Tan? Anything?

It WORKS!!! I am wearing one now and it's super cute! I like it much better than the sponge-thing I used to use for the perfect bun.
