freshly squeezed

Hi guys! Just a quick update for subscribers to my 'home' blog - I've got a few more new posts up on my tumblr!* There's a new outfit post (in which I nerd out about punctuation), a recap of my 30x30 remixes (including which outfits were my personal favorites), and my very first video post (in which I literally let my hair down - prepare for awkwardness).

I hate to bog down your RSS readers with a lot of Blogger posts linking to new Tumblr posts, so for the time being I'll only be updating the 'home' blog with links to my posts on Tumblr every few days or so. However, I have just started using Twitter, so if you'd like more frequent updates (or just to get a little extra glimpse into the day-to-day realities of my traveling lifestyle), you can follow my tweets @the_other_emily.

Thirty outfits, twenty-six garments (five t-shirts, five pairs of shoes, four sweaters, three pairs of pants, three tanks, two skirts, two blouses, and one dress), four countries, two continents,* and one suitcase. Whew.

While I suspect that my post-remix experience will be a little anti-climactic (after all, I only have about five garments that weren't included in my picks to remix), I am still glad to have finished. Things didn't go exactly as I'd planned (namely, seven of my original picks getting hung up in customs), but I feel like I still managed to embrace the spirit of the challenge and get a lot out of my limited wardrobe in the process. I wore a few outfits that probably wouldn't have occurred to me otherwise (particularly #8 and #25), came up with a few combinations that I will definitely be going back to again, and remix #11 just made it onto the 'featured' page at Weardrobe, which is pretty cool. My most worn items were, unsurprisingly, my overdyed skinnies (12 times!) and my boots (10), and my least worn were my red t-strap sandals (1), which were an admittedly unseasonable late addition.

Looking back, I think my favorite outfits are #4, #12, #13, and #24 - which is your favorite?

*Dang, should have taken one of my Istanbul photos on the Asian side of the city - I could have scored another continent!

gold chain necklace - Forever 21 / red print button-down - vintage, thrifted / gray sweater - H&M / ankle-zip leggings - mommed, Style&Co / brogues - Primark

Today I started easing back into the rest of my 'closet' slowly, one piece at a time, since I feel like I've got to stretch out the reunion as long as possible. It seems to be working for me so far, as this is one of my favorite recent outfits. The leggings and sweater had me feeling like I was in pajamas all day, but the high-buttoned collar and brogues kept things a bit more pulled together. A few months ago I lamented that while I loved this shirt, it really wasn't very versatile; I must have found at least four new ways to wear it since then.*

We've decided to go ahead and make some pretty big, unexpected changes to our travel plans, so we spent our third (third!) snow day working out new logistics on that front. While we are sacrificing some things we'd really been looking forward to, I think our new plan is ultimately a change for the better.

I also made my very first video for the blog today! I've still got a little editing to do (and a little more confidence to drum up) before I post it, but I should have that up here tomorrow - and if nothing else, you guys can have the slightly uncanny experience of finally hearing my voice. (I did not, ahem, get around to those pesky taxes I was going to tackle today...)

Oh! And after some gentle prodding from a few blog friends, I finally got on Twitter. I am still getting the hang of it (like, what is the ettiquette for unsolicited 'tweeting' at somebody?), but if you're interested in wry cultural observations with an international slant - I'm thinking Jerry Seinfeld meets Carmen Sandiego (WHAT is the DEAL with NICARAGUA?) (Ok, I promise my tweets aren't quite that bad.) - you can follow me @the_other_emily.

*To let you in on just how much of a nerd I am, as soon as I finished writing that sentence I immediately googled the proper use of a semicolon; it turns out my usage is totally kosher. However, I cannot vouch similarly for the mixed punctuation in my last paragraph.

3.11.11 HOT AIR
Here it is, my very first video post! I've been asked a few times (on the blog and IRL) how I do my hair in my now-almost-daily bun, so I put together a little tutorial video yesterday afternoon. I am always fascinated when bloggers I've been reading for a while post videos - somehow I am always surprised by their speaking voices and mannerisms, and I imagine some of my readers will have that same uncanny experience with this one (e.g., did anyone expect me to talk with my hands quite so much?).

You could call this the 'no-twist' bun (which gets extra cool points for doubling as a reference to one of my favorite bands), but I always think of it as my 'hot air bun,' since its volume is about 80% empty space. It works well with shorter/medium length hair, and could probably work with longer hair with a little trial-and-error. My bun wound up a good deal sloppier than usual in this video, but if you give it a few tries in front of a mirror, you should be able to make it as neat or messy as you'd like.

This is also the very first time I've worn my hair down on the blog. I've been growing out a pretty serious pixie cut for about a year and a half now, and since I haven't had a cut in all that time, it is a pretty awkward mix of lengths at this point. I'm hoping to get a real haircut sometime in the next few months, I'm just waiting for the front to get a little bit longer.

On a substantially more serious note, my thoughts and sympathies are with all those affected by the earthquake and resultant tsunamis in Japan. I am incredibly fortunate to know that my friends there are safe and far from harm's way, but there are still untold numbers of injured and displaced civilians in danger. I encourage everyone looking for a way to help those affected by the disaster to consider making donations through the American Red Cross - you can donate directly to the relief effort here.

3.7.11 FAMOUS

Those who've been reading my blog for a little while might remember my mentioning that I was asked to be in some press photos while visiting the Design Museum in London. I checked the exhibition blog for a day or two to see if they'd show up, but then I sort of forgot about it for a while. Well, I did a little looking today, and found my photo in this article on Luxist.com (of all places!), in slideshows on IBNLive (which is CNN in India) and zimbio.com, and, hilariously, as the lead image in an examiner.com article on bicycling.

(The irony is, I can't even really ride a bike.)

My apologies to those who come here looking for pretty pictures - I'm rather short on those today (and long on potentially dull stories). You see, mediocre as these photos may be outfit-wise, they are nevertheless kind of a miracle. This is the outfit post that almost wasn't.

We spent this afternoon exploring the Taksim area of Istanbul, on the northernmost of the city's three major peninsulas. It's considered the modern center of the city, and I thought we'd find lots of great spots to take some pictures for the blog, but then.... we got lost. Really lost. We haven't actually gotten a decent map of the city yet, and while Chris usually does pretty well with the mini-maps he draws by hand (which I love, and want to collect and frame), this time we got off-track somewhere and wound up under a highway overpass. An older gentlemen watched our confusion with amusement - while he pooped on the ground. Yeah.... awesome.

So by the time we actually found our way back to civilization, the wind had picked up and we were just about frozen solid, so I had to resign myself to taking pictures with my big old puffy coat still on. It may not make the greatest style statement, but on the bright side, the Turkish guys on the tram will always give you a seat when you look vaguely pregnant.

After freezing our toes off all afternoon, we decided to  head home, make a lovely roast chicken dinner, and get properly warmed up. We picked up a few necessities at the store, then walked back to our place. The neighborhood was oddly quiet for the hour, and many of the shops had closed up early. I started to notice candles in the windows, and a portable generator humming happily on the sidewalk, and got a sinking feeling.

The power was out. No lights, no heat, and no running water. Even our oven is electric. We threw our food in the fridge and slammed the door as fast as possible, vowing not to open it until the power came on. We lit the few mostly-burnt-out candles we had, huddled under the duvet, and hoped for the best. After about half an hour, the lights flickered back on, the plumbing gurgled, and the router came back to life. We were saved.

For about five minutes.

And then the power went back out for another three hours. We bought a bunch more candles, ran down the laptop batteries watching old TV shows, ate cookies (him) and Ruffles (me) for dinner and all got tummyaches. (Yes, we are adults in our mid-late-twenties, and no, we would not survive in the wild.) Fortunately the power is back on now, although there is still no water, and our hard-gotten outfit photos will make it on the blog tonight after all. After such a long day, I am thrilled that the weather tomorrow is predicted to be just awful - I have big plans to sleep in, stay home guilt-free and make that dinner after all.

...and done! With the 30x30 challenge, that is - although in my case, I never quite got up to 30 items, so it was more of a 26 for 30. I can't wait to start wearing the five or so other things I have with me.
As promised, the weather today is freezing (and snowing!), so we're enjoying a little indoor day in the wake of our chilly adventures yesterday. We lost power at least once more last night, but it was only for about ten minutes, and while food safety concerns are likely to become a more hotly debated topic once dinnertime approaches, for now I think we are reasonably comfortable with the relative advisability of eating the food we already have in our fridge (i.e., raw chicken). We are total daredevils.

On top of being my last day of the remix challenge, today is my first time participating in Everybody Everywear. Since these sheer tights are the only polka-dotted item that came with us on our trip, my options were pretty limited! What a day to be separated from my home closet though - right before we left, I thrifted these amazing silk palazzo pants, black with white polka dots, and I'd love to pair them up with a chambray shirt and my platform sandals and dream about spring weather. Le sigh. I'll just have to hope for an Indian summer when we get back to the US, so I can get at least a few weeks' wear out of all my left-behind summer favorites.

Chambray was actually my EBEW suggestion for this round, and while I was pretty psyched it made it to the final vote, I wound up relieved that it didn't win - my chambray button-down is one of the pieces from home that's still stuck in London! After choosing my tights, the rest of this outfit came together pretty easily. I still haven't managed to iron my poor, crumpled pink skirt, so I decided to keep things easy and go with this thrifted dress. The soft jersey is perfect for a day of lounging around, playing cards and reading,* and I figured the studded shoulders could even count as a subtle extra set of dots.

Don't forget to check out how other bloggers styled up their polka dots today at Everybody Everywear!

necklace - vintage, great grandmother's / watch - La Mer / cat print blouse - Zara / pink striped sweater - H&M / overdyed skinnies - Zara / boots - Steve Madden

We took these yesterday right after leaving the Grand Bazaar. It's Istanbul's biggest marketplace, and filled with all kinds of goodies - jewelry, scarves, clothes, leather goods, handbags, antiques, lamps, furniture, books... pretty much you name it. It was sort of funny to see it after experiencing the souks in Morocco - while the bazaar is famous for its huge scale, dazzling variety, and aggressive salesmen, after the souks it seemed so relaxed! I have never been a big fan of intense salesmanship, but I think Fes really thickened my skin about it.

I did make my very first stab at bargaining though, and while this might seem like a pretty standard issue tourist experience, it was a pretty big deal for me. I am still kicking myself over not buying any shoes or jewelry in Morocco, and the truth is that it was because I am horribly intimidated by negotiation! I am convinced I have no poker face whatsoever, and I always cave immediately. It's honestly a wonder that I managed to sell my car for more than a box of Crackerjack. I don't think I did too badly on my first time out though - I've been looking for a small compass to wear as a necklace, and finally found a great shop selling vintage navigational equipment that had the perfect '70s compass. I managed to counter-offer (and counter-counter-offer) without being too awkward (I think), and ultimately walked away, pride intact, when we couldn't agree on a price. There is a happy ending though - Chris is going to go back for it in a few days and see if he can get it a little cheaper.
We took our first few photos on a little side street near the bazaar, which wound up not being quite so deserted as we'd thought - we had to keep carefully timing our photos in between the huge crowds of people that kept popping around the corner! So we eventually decided to move on to someplace a little more scenic - the park across from the Sultanahmet Cami, aka the Blue Mosque.

migration

As you may have already gathered, my plans to circumnavigate Turkey's ban on Blogger have not been entirely successful. Completely unable to access Blogger from our home in Istanbul, I found myself faced with three options:

a. keep posting via email, with links to my Flickr in lieu of embedded images;
b. send finished posts to friends outside of Turkey and ask them to publish for me; or
c. take an enforced blogging vacation for the month of March.

While my cold little heart was warmed to learn that many of you actually clicked through all my janky links to view yesterday's outfit photos on Flickr, I don't want to ask that much clicking of you all month (Carpal Tunnel is real!), nor do I want to impose any more on friends stateside to publish posts for me, and given how much I've been enjoying blogging on our travels, option C seemed particularly distasteful. So I chose:

d. start a Tumblr!

I did a little more googling, and it turns out Turkey doesn't block Tumblr - so for the rest of this month, you can find me blogging at http://the-other-emily.tumblr.com. I've just put up my first outfit post there, so go check it out! I'll still update this blog when I have a new post up on Tumblr, so subscribers will still get a heads-up, and I'll be back to my regular blog-home when we leave Turkey at the end of the month. And again, many thanks to all my readers for your patience with this unexpected blogging hiccup!

3.4.11 MIGRATION
Welcome to my new temporary blog home! As evidenced by the nasty mess of uninterpreted html code that went live on my blog yesterday, I haven't exactly arrived at a functional work-around for the Turkish Blogger ban. Rather than spend a month asking friends outside of Turkey to post for me, or continue publishing posts that are only half-baked (raw html will give you salmonella, you know), I've decided to just pop on over here to Tumblr for the month! I'm thinking of it as a blog vacation home. I'll be updating my home blog with links here every time I post, so subscribers to the main blog should still get a heads-up, and I'll be moving back to my original Blogger home when I leave Turkey at the end of the month.

My apologies for the nasty indoor photos again - we waited 'til far too late in the afternoon to head outside for photos, and had to use the flourescent lights inside - yuck! Today wound up being an impromptu TCB day, devoted to such exciting pursuits as filing taxes and doing laundry, so I took advantage of the opportunity to wear something maybe not-so-Istanbul-appropriate. This is pretty much my lazy-day-at-home uniform - I spared you the horrifically worn-out cardigan, but couldn't be bothered with makeup, hair-brushing, or any particularly inventive use of accessories. I did at least break out my new navy tights - I have been loving the way Amanda has been wearing similar ones with lavender and earth tones lately, so I grabbed a pair at H&M while we were in Edinburgh. They're a fun alternative to basic black, and I love them with the rust color of this skirt.

My limited use of the internet here is proving a somewhat bigger hurdle than I'd anticipated. As I worked on writing and publishing my last post, I lost progressively more and more Blogger dashboard functionality, until I finally arrived at zero. I am now writing this post via email, with no real guarantees it will publish to the blog properly, and no way to edit it once it does. On top of that, I was alerted today by dear friend S. (of Narrowly Tailored) that my Disqus comments are misbehaving. I'm sorry things have gotten a little bumpy around here, but please bear with me as I try to keep posting as best I can while in Turkey. (And as always, if you really need to get in touch but can't leave a comment, feel free to email me via the "contact" link on the About Me page.)

I'm still trying to get a feel for the recommended level of sartorial modesty here, so I played it pretty safe today with this outfit. I know I talked about the myriad virtues of scarves a lot while I was in Morocco, but it cannot be repeated enough - a  light, printed scarf like this one is definitely the MVP of any traveling wardrobe when visiting predominantly Muslim countries. I loved the extra pop of color and pattern this one added to my outfit, and I was able to easily convert it into a headscarf while visiting the Blue Mosque.

Not to spoil the surprise or anything, but I am in Istanbul now! Exciting, right? This has absolutely nothing to do with these photos (taken a few days ago in Glasgow), but it surprisingly has everything to do with my blogging. See, I went to fire up my bloglovin' today, but I kept getting this error message, "Bu siteye erişim mahkeme kararıyla engellenmiştir," almost every time I'd try to view a whole post. Huh. So finally I popped that phrase into Google Translate:

"This prevented access to the site by court order."

Oh. Right.

The internet is totally censored here. While it probably reveals an incredible amount of naïveté on my part, I was pretty shocked. I can still view a few self-hosted blogs, but no Blogger or Wordpress, and my Disqus dashboard is only about half functional. I am still able to use Flickr, keep up with most of my favorite blogs on Google Reader, and seem to be able to create (but not preview) posts here. I can't leave comments on other blogs and am not sure yet whether I'll be able to answer my own. Oh yeah, and we're here for a whole month. I'm going to do what I can to keep up my posting schedule, but my apologies if things look a little janky around here for a while. Personally, I am definitely anticipating some serious blogroll withdrawal....

So...yeah. That's weird! But let me get down to more important business - these rad pictures Chris took of me in Glasgow. I'd initially planned to grab some photos in Kelvingrove Park, or somewhere else more readily identified with the city, but I couldn't resist the graphic potential of this sunny pedestrian bridge over the Clydeside Expressway.

This particular outfit was not what I'd planned to wear on our trip to Glasgow on Monday. I'd planned to wear this skirt, as it's been sorely neglected over the course of my 30x30, only making two outings so far. However, as our previous apartment had an iron but no ironing board (and it's the same deal here - seriously, what is up with that?), and I discovered that I am even more inept with a garment steamer than an iron, that plan had to get quickly scrapped in favor of wearing my pink stripes again. I was surprised how much I ended up liking this outfit - while I'm usually pretty insistent on having some kind of waist-definition going on, this boxy sweater over jersey dress combo was ridiculously comfy but still felt pretty cute. I realized later that the colors I went for in the outfit were almost identical to those I wore the day before, just in different proportions.

Unfortunately I was not able to get back my package of clothes yesterday - it turns out Heathrow won't actually let you leave the connecting flights terminal unless escorted by security, no matter how many tears you shed in front of the British Airways Customer Service desk, and they won't take you if your layover is under three hours long. So, after weeks of anticipation, many calls to UK Customs and Parcel Force, forking over a chunk of change on VAT, a few final days of frantic planning, Skyping, haranguing delivery drivers, and dragging a family friend out to the airport with package in tow....bupkiss. The upside is that at least my goodies are with someone I trust, and I'll definitely get them back sometime in May. In the meantime, I'll just have to keep on keepin' on, working with what I've got. Sigh.

Y'all, I really like this one. And I don't think that's just the thrill of a new sweater talking.

Well, ok, maybe it is. Because this sweater? It rocks. (And for those keeping score, it's only the 26th item I've worn in my remix so far, so not totally cheating....)

Normally, as a curvy and rather petite lady, I avoid tops with this kind of shorter, boxier fit for fear of the dastardly things they might do to my shape, but given my affinities for both stripes and for wearing things the exact same color as my skin (like being naked, but better!), when I spotted this one on sale at H&M I was powerless to resist. (I'd actually gone in hoping to find a mustard-colored cardigan, but apparently mustard is not very "in" right now.) I love the easiness of the loose fit, and that the shorter length allows it to read "oversized" without being overwhelming. For it's first day out, I kept things simple and just paired it with dark neutrals and a few of my favorite gold and brown accessories. I'm definitely looking forward to some wilder stripey pink remixes to come...

Yesterday was our last real day in Edinburgh, as we're making a day trip to Glasgow today and then leaving Scotland on Tuesday. We spent the better part of the day hiking up Arthur's Seat, a massive volcanic hill that overlooks the city, then walking around the old city, grabbing a late lunch, and stopping in to the City Art Center. It's still a little disappointing that we lost two days of our visit to my being sick, but we'll just have to come back to Edinburgh another time to see all the things we haven't had time for. Fortunately we'll have lots of time to explore our next home - and it couldn't be more different than this one!

I also got some very exciting to me (and probably not that interesting to everyone else) news - all my packages are not lost! I sent a package home from Spain about a month ago, and it finally arrived the other day. And even better... the package my mother sent me isn't lost, it's in London! So I'm working on various elaborate schemes to get my hands on it - it'll either be this week, or not 'til May! So we'll see how that goes.

Yesterday I finally felt well enough to leave the apartment,* so we took a little walk up Calton Hill to see the view and enjoy the sunshine. You can see the Scottish Royal Palace behind me in these photos, and behind that, Arthur's Seat, the much bigger volcanic hill we wound up climbing today. What you cannot see in these photos is how crazy-bad my eyes were watering from the wind, or how many used condoms were on the ground freakin' everywhere. (I love you Scotland, but please, keep it indoors!) Yes, the lengths to which I will go for the outfit shots knows no bounds.

I'll admit to having some qualms about posting this outfit on the blog at all, as it's remarkably similar to this one (albeit comparatively under-accessorized). I used to be a serious outfit-repeater. I would come up with a combination that I liked, and I'd go back to it frequently, often wearing the exact same thing multiple times in a month. A big part of why I started blogging my outfits was to force myself to be a little more creative with my closet, to try and mix things up a little and see if I couldn't come up with some more interesting results. I feel like I've more or less been making good progress on that front, but a major side-effect has been a total phobia of repetition. I never meant to make a rule for myself that I couldn't wear an outfit more than once, only that I'd like to not do it all the time, and yet since I've been blogging my outfits, I have avoided it assiduously.

What do you guys think - is it a cardinal blogger crime to wear the same thing twice?

*Or, more likely, got sick enough of being sick to throw caution to the wind.

...otherwise known as Day Two of my couch vigil, brought to you by Earl Gray, Kleenex, and copious quantities of expired Sudafed.

I am nothing if not dedicated to optimism while sick, so despite my body's misgivings, I made an effort to actually get up and get dressed today in hopes of making at least some small excursion. We even ventured out to get some lunch and for me to scope the nearest Salvation Army, but by the time we got there I was too exhausted for serious thrifting, and was further demoralized by the price tag on the first awesome dress I found.* So, once again, we turned 'round and headed home, and I swapped my tights for leggings and have been in a sniffly heap on the couch ever since. The highlight of my day was probably getting the boyfriend to watch a Justin Bieber number on a recent episode of Glee, as the Biebs has fairly recently entered our collective cultural awareness (yeah, we're old), but we weren't sure we had actually heard any of his music as of yet.

Much as I love this corner of our kitchen (it makes me feel like I'm in an Anthropologie catalog!), I have majorly high hopes of feeling better tomorrow, and making it out to some more interesting photo locations. Being sick is so totally boring, y'all.

*As an aside, it makes me so nuts when thrift shops mark-up 'vintage' pieces. To me it is totally different from the premium I expect to pay at a store devoted to vintage, where buyers are using their expertise to hunt down great pieces and curate their offerings for discerning customers. Thrifts that rely on donations don't bring any of that added value, so why should I pay £18 for one dress versus £2 for another, just because you've successfully identified it as 'old'? Obviously this burns me more in for-profit shops rather than charities, but still. (And I did not buy the £18 dress.)

I went for a pretty simple outfit today, counting on the pretty print of my vintage button-down to keep things interesting. We'd planned to hike up one of the volcanic hills overlooking Edinburgh, so comfort was definitely key. We took our pictures inside because yesterday I felt like I was getting a little sick - then we headed out for our walk, and I quickly realized I was definitely already sick. It never fails, I only get sick on days with really lovely weather. We turned around and headed home, and I've since spent the afternoon watching TV under the duvet - hopefully we'll get another sunny day soon, and my nasty cold won't last too long!

I'm pretty pleased to be 2/3 of the way through my 30x30, although I think coming to the end of the remix challenge will be a bit of an anti-climax - I don't exactly have a lot of other clothes to wear! Still, having given up halfway through last summer, I expect to have at least some sense of accomplishment. Here's a round-up of my last ten remixes:

30 for 30: 11 through 15
30 for 30: 16 through 20
Evidently, I really had a thing for dark blues this past week! I think my favorites from this bunch are #12, #14, and #18.
