Just a simple outfit for a warm day of thrifting. (My apologies for the double straps, no matter how many boxes of clothes I root through, I can't seem to find a strapless bra.) This is more or less my standard outfit formula for a trip to the thrifts - shoes that are easy to slip on and off, a fitted top over which I can try on jackets or blouses, a belt for experimenting with the fit of oversized pieces, and a loose, lightweight skirt or dress so I can pull things on underneath without flashing strangers. Both the shops I visited today had dressing rooms, but it never hurts to be prepared, and being able to shimmy in and out of a few 'maybes' in an abandoned aisle can be a big timesaver.
While we were at the Salvation Army, a tornado warning for the area came in over the radio. After getting home, we took these photos in easily under three minutes, then hustled back inside just before a pretty serious storm rolled in. It looks like we're pretty unlikely to see any funnel clouds around here, but we are certainly getting some pretty spectacular thunder and lightning for now. I love listening to big summer storms pass over, and with thunder-phobic Winston still down in Virginia, for once I get to really enjoy it.

I love that a tornado warning didn't stop you from taking outfit photos!!
I have this dress and have never thought about belting it. Now I'm just going to have to recreate it. Lovely Em!
I love the contrast of the colors in your dress with your pink flats. Also, great tips for thriftng outfit! I would never think to wear a belt just in case...
Ha! Yes, probably not the greatest idea. It really didn't look like much when we went out to take photos, but minutes after we came in the storm really rolled in pretty fiercely, and we spent the next few hours tracking the storms on TV. I even packed up a little bag with my laptop, cell phone, etc. to set by the basement stairs in case we had to take cover!
What a pretty patterned dress -- I love the brown belt and the pink-ish flats paired with it too!
Thanks Liz! For some reason, I always belt this dress.... along with everything else I wear. I should probably just start going to Beltaholics Anonymous meetings at this point.
Thank you! I used to have to be pretty rigorous with my 'thrifting outfits' when I lived in NJ, as it seemed very few of the thrift stores there had dressing rooms.
Thanks Izabela - I pretty much lived in this dress last summer, it was just so easy to throw on with minimal accessories in hot weather.
great outfit, but mostly just posting to say I'm glad you're ok! I've been watching the storms from (very rainy) northern california, and worrying about all my friends in Mass (& all my favorite bloggers too). Oh, nice selection of soon to be summer shorts as well! rock that shit!
I'm obsessed with your shoes. SO cute. I hope the storm didn't do any damage!
I have this very same dress and wear it with quite a similar belt. I love how comfy and summer it is and definitely agree that it's perfect for thrifting. I am myself a fan of the quick and dirty, "put it on in the aisle" method.
Does it mean that I'm a weirdo if I really like that we've worn such similar outfits? Let's hope not. :)
Yeah, I will definitely pull things on under/over my clothes at the thrift store, even if there *is* a dressing room - I always wind up dragging a ridiculous pile of stuff around with me while I shop, so it helps to be able to cull some things periodically. :)
And it doesn't mean you're a weirdo... unless it means I'm also a weirdo. Which is, admittedly, highly likely. We'll just say we're long-distance twinsies (and I am obviously the runty one).
Thanks
Casey - we definitely got super lucky as far as the storms were
concerned, all the projected tornado paths were supposed to go right
through our town but they all passed us by.
Thank you! Fortunately for us there wasn't any storm damage in our area, but there was some pretty serious destruction further out in Western Mass.
