I generally try to keep things positive here on ye olde blogge, as I know we've all got our problems and that in the big picture, mine are pretty puny, but I still have to say: yesterday was rough. Yes, even with my faaaabulous traveling lifestyle, sometimes I still have those days, where no amount of incredible weather, spectacular scenery, or blissful joblessness can pull me out of my funky mood.
It started (as most of my days do) when I got dressed; we had our laundry done yesterday (Which, sidenote: awesome. I want to always drop off my dirties in the morning and pick up cleans in the evening.) so my options were pretty limited. Unfortunately, the sweater-dress and tights combo I wound up choosing managed to leave me both overdressed (WAY too stinkin' hot) and underdressed (a little short-of-hemline for churches), so I was uncomfortable and crabby all morning. Top that off with having my requests to eat lunch ignored so long that I was half-dizzy with hunger, then discovering that all the lunch places in North Roma are closed at 4pm, and THEN getting ripped off (for one stupid euro!) buying a pathetic 'lunch' of potato chips and Coke (regular, ugh!) at the only bar we could find that was actually open. Although by the time we took these photos we had (mostly) made up from our (numerous) fights of the day, I will admit that any smiles in these pictures are at least 50% faking it.
Oh well. Fortunately today was much, much better, and tomorrow's looking good too.
(And for all my fellow architecture nerds: We took these photos in Renzo Piano's Parco della Musica. Except for the last one, which we took outside Zaha Hadid's Maxxi Museum. And yet I was still cranky.)

oooh...a zaha outfit photo!
emily, you have just described every trip mark and i have taken together TO A T. as a (ahem, picky) vegetarian, traveling is not easy with me. "hungry crabby" is an all too familiar term in our household.
on a lighter note, i am LOVING your braids!!!
glad you two made up! This amazing background maybe needs to be visited again with big smiley faces :) It's my favorite sweater and I adore the outfit! You inspired me to buy my first striped cardigan!!
I know days like that all too well. Happy things are looking up. Love the olive tights. I need a tutorial for the braids, they are awesome.
Hey,
I'm flying to Rome on wednesday and I've been having a hard time trying to figure out what kind of weather is there right now. I thought it was a coat weather but from your photos it seems that it's a cardigan weather. Am I right? I wouldn't want to overpack.
Oh man, have I EVER had days like that. More and more of them lately, which is kind of a bummer. It's amazing how cranky you get when you're hungry, huh? In some ways, we're still just whiny, crying infants, aren't we?
Hello from another Emily! I've recently discovered your blog and am so enjoying the combination of travel and style talk, two of my favorite things. I can totally relate to hunger-induced travel grouchiness - my husband and I were in Europe for a month last summer, and I can't count the number of times I transformed into an awful person with no interest in my surroundings when meals were delayed. I hope your weekend was better!

I know!! We actually tried to do one in Glasgow at the Transportation Museum, but it's not done yet and we couldn't get past all the construction fencing. :)
Isn't that just the worst??! It's like, I told you I was hungry. Four times. What are you not getting?? The crappy thing is that he's the exact same way, we just don't seem to get hungry at the same times, so we just take turns being grouchy!
I love them too! I am actually meaning to put together some kind of little photo-tutorial for the blog on how I do them, since my hair's not anywhere near long enough to do them the 'regular' way.
Thanks Anja! I definitely think we will be back. I'd love to visit Rome again with a little more time, so we could take it all at a more leisurely pace. It's crazy to me that we're actually leaving tomorrow!
I'm trying to get as much wear out of my tights as I can before it gets too hot! I love bare legs in summertime, but for some reason it always takes me a few weeks to get used to the idea. I have to ease into it slowly. :)
And I am definitely going to get a braids tutorial up on the blog sometime in the next week or so - I just have to rope my photographer in while I'm doing my hair!
It has been very warm and sunny over the last few days, but I think it's about to cool back down a little bit. I'd recommend cardigans and a light jacket, so you can layer them together or wear them separately as weather permits. You'll definitely always want something with long sleeves if you're out in the evening. You should also know that you need to have your shoulders & knees covered to visit any churches or basilicas, so even on warmer days it's a good idea to wear longer skirts or pants and keep a light cardigan or shawl in your bag - you never know when you're going to stumble across a gorgeous cathedral and want to peek inside!
Definitely. I think I am absolutely the worst when I'm hot too, despite growing up in Virginia I just can't handle it!
Thanks Emily, and welcome! Fortunately my weekend did get much, much better. :)
Ahh! They were just building the Zaha when i was there. It was all bones. It's nice to see it finished.
Oh, I totally know what you mean. There have been a few days recently when I was just in one of those moods...annoyed by everything, even myself, and for no real reason. I've even thought to myself "Seriously, Santina? It's 85 degrees and sunny, and the ocean is calling your name. What is there to be cranky about?" but that still didn't snap me out of it. And no one likes to be around me when I'm hungry. Talk about Crankypants!
When I'm cranky, I usually reach for stripes, so the fact that you were cranky when you pulled this on makes me like it that much more!
