sunglasses - thrifted / scarf - gift / sweater - boyfriend's / tote - forever 21 / overdyed skinnies - zara / brogues - primark
Although my sartorial differences with the Italians have already been well-documented, I did make something of an attempt to dress like a local on our first day in our most recent stop - Venice! Even having seen the city with my own eyes, it's hard to believe this place really exists; the whole city is so picturesque (and improbable!) that it's hard not to think of it as Disneyland writ large.
My long-suffering SO has implored me to stop adding to our luggage, so I've been forced to come up with alternatives to shopping for when wardrobe boredom hits. He's been complaining for months about the rapidly shrinking size of this merino sweater, so I decided to appropriate it for this near-monochromatic look. Topped with a casually looped scarf and my (fake) Ray-Bans, I think I almost passed for a Venetian.
I'm afraid I'm keeping things short and sweet tonight - since Venice we've moved on to a new home (one which encourages the near-constant consumption of baguettes and Côtes du Rhône (Subtle, no?)), and at the end of our first full day I am appropriately exhausted. Fortunately I have lots more photos from

Ahh, Venice. I just lectured about Scarpa yesterday. Your Venice experience looks very sunny. My Venice experience was cold and foggy.
your travels just keep getting more and more amazing. i'm enormously jealous and delighted that i get to live vicariously through you. and i love this italian-style look--the dark glasses and sweater have great sophisticated euro flair.
also, inquiring minds have to know: when do you return to the states and where will you be?
bahh jealous once i studied abroad, it was inevitable- bitten by the travel bug! and you look pretty, i'm sure you blend in just find :)
I'm new to your blog and love it, such great photography and places!
It was ridiculously nice our whole time there - I was honestly pretty overdressed for the weather in this outfit. Perfect weather for many, many gelato breaks!
Yeah, I have no idea how I'm going to readjust to a lifestyle that doesn't involve moving to a fantastic new place at least once a month. I may have to ditch this whole architecture thing and get into traveling sales or something. Or join the cabin crew of an airline.
Our return plans are still pretty foggy - our trip will end sometime in early September, and we'll probably spend some time with family (in VA & MA). After that we'll move... somewhere! Hopefully somewhere with jobs (practicing, and maybe also teaching for me), dogparks, public transportation, and not altogether horrible winters. The short list that our recent conversations center around includes NYC, LA, SF, Portland, and Austin.
It is definitely addictive! I think once we get back to the States, I'm going to have to plan a mini-roadtrip at least once every few months to stave off withdrawal. :)
Thanks Naomi, and welcome! Lucky me, I have my talented boyfriend to thank for both. :)
Simple but elegant - a perfect look for Venice! When I travel I want to feel like me but not stand out as a complete foreigner (which happens easily among those Italian ladies), but when I was last in Venice, looking like a complete tourist didn't really matter - turns out in July Venice is exactly like Disneyland: HORDES of visitors!
Ah Venice. What a lovely, lovely place! I hope you took time to sip a Bellini cocktail and soak in the scenery.
You by far have the best back drop for pics than any other blogger in the world. Seriously. I can't believe you will still be traveling for the next few months. Any way I can ship myself over to you and you pack me in a suitcase? No? Ok, your pics and blog will have to do. I love how you make this look look so chic. I have been trying to track down some fake ray bans for the last month or so, even the fake ones I have found are still too expensive for me.
I love those shoes everytime!
Venice is beautiful! and you're right, it's so picturesque it is hard to believe it's real. you are looking like quite the Italian lately. no one on the vaporetto would ever guess you weren't a local. ;) i'm jealous!
can i vouch for austin? it's got plenty of dogparks, the public transit is a little questionable but the winters are mild. unfortunately you trade terrible winters for nearly unbearable summers but it's cheaper than California or NYC, has a fun local culture and no state income tax!
I am definitely pretty pro-Austin, I have a lot of family in Texas already and I fantasize about a life filled with incredible Tex-Mex food and monopolizing the family cabin on Lake Whitney for long weekends. My parents both went to UT and were really hoping I'd go there for grad school so they'd have an excuse to visit. :)
Ha! Too true - supposedly (aka, according to my boyfriend, whose sources tend to remain unverified) there are more tourists than residents in Venice year-round. It was definitely true of our visit, and I can't even imagine how crazy it must get in the summer!
It's still so hard to believe that it's a real place! Although we did a ton of lounging and people-watching, there were very sadly no Bellinis on this trip, despite my repeated suggestions to the contrary. :/
I know, I have no idea what I am going to do about this blog once I'm not traveling anymore! Maybe I will have to invest in a green screen so I can at least pretend I'm still jet-setting about.
These sunglasses are actually kind of comically crappy, but I love them. I got them for $1 at a thrift store, so they were already a little beat up, and since then they've endured a near-constant beating at the bottom of various purses. They lost both their original screws, and the replacements (which I cadged from random other sunglasses) really don't fit very well, so they get super loose and slide down my nose all the time! But, you know, other than that they're perfect. :)
Thanks! I love them too, I have no idea what I'm going to do when they eventually bite the dust.
The one detail I'm definitely missing is the loose, super-long hair! Sadly that's still at least a few years away though.
