DIY dreams

DIY colorblock shirts
After Winston, the thing I think I've been missing most on this trip is being able to make things. I've been filling up my notebooks and Pinterest boards with ideas for projects at an astonishing rate, so I thought I'd share one of my favorite recent DIY ideas - inspired by this blouse and brought to life with a little help from polyvore. Now I can't wait until I have access to proper thrift stores and my beloved sewing machine!

I am so doing this! I have a vintage teal silk blouse that has a few stains, but merging its better half with another blouse would remedy that.

oh dang, i LOVE this idea! my fav is the bottom left with the cream and rust w/built in tie. SO darn cute.

are your parents sending you many photos and updates about winston while you're away?? :(

What an excellent way to resuscitate a not-so-perfect piece! I'll admit, I may have already drawn myself some dorky construction diagrams of how I'd do the overlapped pockets....

I love the pussybow ones too! Although I think my ultimate favorite might be mixing a sheer blouse with an opaque one for just a little hint of sexiness...

Sadly the puppy photos have been a little thin (Chris and I have been speculating that they made our dog fat!), but I do get lots of updates, especially with the recent spate of thunderstorms on the East Coast. W goes pretty nuts during storms - apparently during a recent one, he braved his fear of the stairs to go hide in my parents' claw-foot tub. He managed to put in the stopper, turn on the hot water full blast, get soaked, and then go lay on the bedroom rug. Fortunately my dad came home soon, and found the tub over half full and still running!

speaking of sewing things, have you seen the pattern magic books?

Yes! A friend in school had the Japanese editions, and I drooled over them on the regular. I'd love to get the translation at some point, but I think I'd like to take a real pattern-making class first to tighten up my basic skills. Hmmm, think I just thought of what to ask for at birthday time... :)

Holy cow. I'm madly in love with these shirts, especially the purple and green ones. I'd love to see how you make them when you do! Are you going to just sew two together?

That's my plan! I'm excited to try and do the overlapped pockets too, I think if I just take out part of the pockets' edge seam, I should be able to stitch the two shirt halves together and then just sew the pocket back over top. I'm definitely planning to put together some kind of DIY tutorial for this project once I have the supplies again.
