home again

I'm back!

Yes, after a month of exile to tumblr, I am happy to say that I am finally back to my regular blogging home. While tumblr was a pretty good way around the censorship issues I experienced in Turkey, and an incredible way to stumble across some great new-to-me bloggers, I am very excited to be back to regular posting here on Blogger.

Otherwise not too much to report here – just spent the day getting brunch, visiting a museum, and shopping for groceries, all while walking around some kind of acropolis thing…

!!!

That’s right, we’re in Athens! You’ll have to excuse my giant cheeser grin in nearly all of these photos, but I am just ecstatically excited to be here. Greece wasn’t on our original itinerary (much to my chagrin), but as we made our post-Istanbul travel arrangements a few weeks ago, I was thrilled to discover how much easier (and less expensive) our plans would be if we stopped here along the way!

Of course, that whole 'easier' part didn't really seem to be working out so well for us last night - as those who follow me on Twitter already heard, our travel day yesterday featured the zipper on my bag splitting open on the street (twice), a crucial stretch of our metro line in Athens being closed, massive confusion about where we were to pick up keys to our apartment, boyfriend promptly breaking one of said keys in half trying to open the door of our apartment, and then both of us later getting locked out because we'd failed to realize the broken key was actually the one that opened the street door. Yikes. After a few frantic phone calls from the internet cafe down the street (which sells tallboys, is packed at 10:30 on a Thursday night, and whose internal atmosphere is at least 70% B.O.), we managed to make contact with our 'landlord' here, who called the very sweet building super to let us in.

Since then things have been on a determined upswing - after a surprisingly excellent brunch this morning (cappuccino, simple omelet, grilled ciabatta drizzled with olive oil and herbs, and incredible surprise brownies with fresh whipped cream on the house!), we roamed around Psyri and scoped out the streets of the flea market, then worked our way through Plaka and eventually circled the entire Acropolis. We climbed Areopagus hill (where we took the first and last photos), then headed over to the new Acropolis Museum. We were both a bit surprised at how much we liked Tschumi's building (nerd alert!), and how tangibly one feels the absence of the Elgin marbles. While I don't support repatriation unconditionally, the British Museum's position on their 'stewardship' of the marbles smacks to me of a fairly indefensible 'finders-keepers' ('thieves-keepers?') imperialist attitude.

Ok, end rant. Now pictures!

This is actually the second day in a row that I've worn this outfit, but with all the craziness of traveling yesterday we didn't get a chance to snap pictures. Getting to wear outfits you like multiple days in a row is just one of the many blessings of traveling in a country where nobody knows you. Yesterday I wore it with boots, and I didn't have much in mind putting it together beyond keeping my heaviest pants and shoes out of our suitcases; however, I suspect that somewhere along the line this image wormed its way into my brain and gave me a little nudge of inspiration. I also felt like my wide leg jeans and army jacket gave me just a little bit of a grown-up Lindsay Weir vibe, which is never a bad thing.

In case you haven't seen it yet (although you should have, because you should seriously already be reading Off of Broadway religiously), the unfairly chic vintage vixen otherwise known as Amanda featured one of my recent outfits in a post chock-full of gorgeous blogger inspiration. I am so flattered to be in such great company, and promptly nerded out about it pretty hard and tried to explain to my oh-so-patient boyfriend (yet again) just how cool it is to get to know some of my favorite bloggers a little better. He smiled and nodded, because he is a very good man.

And now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to open up a bottle of wine left for us by our host. Happy Friday!

Thanks, it's good to be back! (Although I'll admit, I'd kind of forgotten how obnoxious Blogger can be about formatting posts with images - oh well!)

Strangely enough for a couple of architects, we didn't take many pictures of the museum. There's no photography inside (the marbles are shy), and I think the boyfriend only took a few snaps outside. I'll see if I can prize those away from him and get them up on flickr though. :)

I am absolutely loving it here so far - the weather is great, the people are nice, and the food is just delightful (although an unpleasant incidence of food-borne illness in the wee hours this morning did dampen my enthusiasm a bit on that last point). I so wish we were staying here longer, as I'd love to explore Greece a bit beyond Athens and particularly to visit some of the islands - alas, we move on Tuesday!

I am, if nothing else, an expert at the art of camouflage. :)

Woah! That's pretty nuts that you worked for Cuno, all of my experience with this kind of issues comes secondhand from my mom's work (cultural anthropologist studying plains Indian art) - while there is at least some merit to the argument that 'history belongs to everyone,' it does seem to me rather dicey when acquisition approaches the line of looting.

Aw, thanks!

Welcome back, dear!

I love this outfit, and these photos! What a gorgeous day.

I don't know if I mentioned it when you first wore them, but I love the wash on these jeans—what a great color! They're super flattering and look great on you, even if they make me super jealous that you can tuck in your shirts :)

Great blog! Do you have any tips and hints for aspiring writers?

I'm planning to start my own blog soon but I'm a little lost on everything.
Would you propose starting with a free platform like Wordpress or go for a paid option?
There are so many options out there that I'm totally confused .. Any ideas? Thanks a lot!
